Paperclips is a society at the University of Sydney that engages with the socio-economic challenges arising from artificial intelligence. Whether you're a politics, law, philosophy, architecture, CS or maths student (or any other major!), we think you'd really enjoy it.
We have interesting philosophical discussions on what it means to create and to be human in the age of AI, accompanied with free pizza and good vibes.
Questions we could explore
- Art, writing and mathematics in the age of AIWhat does it mean to make art, to create and to do academic research in the age of AI?
- Democracy, freedom and AIDoes AI pose a risk to democracy?
- Do you think AIs are conscious? Are AIs conscious, and what does that mean for AI safety?
- Frontier AI governanceShould we have open-source AI models, given the potential for misuse by bad actors?
…and more! Our topics change with whatever members are interested in, so suggestions are always welcome.
What's in it for me?
Free pizza and a chance to get to know people from different majors over a shared topic and have deep conversations. If you're an engineer, you'll get free PEP hours too.
We meet fortnightly, location and time TBC.
